Student Internship Opportunities

Alaska Behavioral Health provides practicum placement and supervised clinical training for approximately 4-6 graduate and undergraduate students each year.

Step 1:  Explore the Program Information on this website to determine if we have a program that fits with your interests and academic goals. Students may contact the AKBH Manager of the program of interest to obtain information about the program, and overall internship duties and responsibilities. This is not an interview.

Step 2: Check for eligibility. Applications are currently only being considered for students enrolled in a program that has a signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with AKBH (or ACMHS, our corporate identity).

    • Currently these programs include only:
        • UAA College of Health and School of Social Work
        • Boise State University College of Health Sciences
        • Alaska Pacific University Counseling Psychology Program
        • University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Liberal Arts and School of Education
        • Boston University School of Social Work
        • University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work
        • Northern Vermont University Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program
        • John Hopkins University School of Nursing
        • University of the Cumberlands Department of Counseling
        • Walden University
        • North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota Master of Public Health program
        • Louisiana State University School of Social Work
    • If you are enrolled in another school, and are interested in pursuing an internship, please have your school’s internship coordinator contact our Human Resources Director, Cheryl Mounts at cmounts@akbh.org or 907-261-5323.

Step 3: Make sure you can meet the requirements

  • AKBH trainings scheduled during normal business hours are required as part of the placement.
  • If an offer for placement has been made, a fingerprint background check is required.

Step 4: Timing and Placement. Please allow at least 30 days for internship placement after the application, resume and transcript copy have been turned into AKBH.

    • Due to limited availability of appropriate internship opportunities within AKBH, internship placement is not guaranteed.
    • Applicants with a greater number of completed clinical courses are more competitive for our clinical internships.

Step 5: To apply, students must complete the AKBH on-line application (a resume and official transcript must be attached).  If an appropriate placement is available, the AKBH Manager will contact the student to schedule a formal interview. Search for the appropriate internship on the Employment Opportunities page, and click Apply Now to access the application.

Non-credit seeking students:

If you do not require class credit for your internship or are interested in an internship in a non-clinical area, please contact Director of Community Relations & Communications, Jessica Cochran at jcochran@acmhs.com.  We may be able to accommodate these requests through a recurring Volunteer agreement, without a formal MOA with your school.
