About Adult Services

Alaska Behavioral Health provides comprehensive therapy services for adults experiencing mild, moderate, and severe mental illness. Our services include:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Psychiatric assessment and treatment
  • Case management in conjunction with therapeutic services
  • Individual and group therapy (including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy)
  • Psycho-social rehabilitation services
  • Peer support
  • Vocational services

Individuals can access services through either a walk-in crisis appointment or during a scheduled intake.

Clinical Managers

Joshua Arvidson, MSS., LCSW
Chief Operations Officer
Joshua is an expert in trauma-informed care for children, and established the Alaska Child Trauma Center at Alaska Behavioral Health. He serves on the Steering Committee for SAMHSA’s National Child Traumatic Stress Network and is the Principal Investigator for the Military Family Child Trauma Program. He’s also on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma and has presented at over 100 conferences on childhood trauma, including the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Joshua serves on the Board of Directors for FOCUS and has designed and taught courses on clinical practice with children and adolescents and childhood trauma for the University of Alaska Anchorage. Joshua has published in the journals, Child Welfare 360, Child Maltreatment, the Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma and Trauma, Abuse and Violence. He’s been recognized by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce as one of Alaska’s “Top 40 Under 40” and has received a Business Achievement Award for Healthcare from the Anchorage Daily News.

Marissa Hanson, MSW, LCSW
Clinical Director
- Marissa Hanson, MSW, LCSW is a Clinical Director for the Partial Hospitalization Program, Residential Services, and Power Center at Alaska Behavioral Health. She has a Certificate in Interpersonal Trauma Studies and has been working with children and their families who have experienced trauma since 2010. Marissa provides trauma training and clinical consultation throughout Alaska.

Sarah Koogle, M. Ed., LPC-S
Clinical Director
Sarah Koogle, M. Ed., LPC-S, has a master’s degree in clinical community counseling. She has traveled and lived in many states and countries, but consider Fairbanks home. Sarah enjoys the Alaskan summer and all that comes with that: hiking and exploring lakes and rivers. She has worked with a wide range of mental health issues in both inpatient and outpatient care, with adults and children. Her passion lies in the community counseling setting.

Chris Mortenson, MSW, LCSW, LPC - S
Clinical Director
Chris Mortenson, MSW, LCSW, LPC-S, is a Clinical Director supporting adult outpatient services in Anchorage and Wasilla. He is a UAA graduate and was a previous intern with Alaska Behavioral Health. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor. He rejoined AKBH in the spring of 2023.

Tonya Herrera, LBSW
Residential Operations Manager - Fairbanks
Tonya Herrera, LBSW, HUMS, ANS, is a 32 year Alaska resident, originally from the Cascade Mountains in Southern Oregon. She has lived in rural Alaska and experienced village life in the small communities of at the confluence of the Yukon-Koyukuk Rivers and north of Fairbanks in the community of Minto. She is a traditional Native American/Native Alaskan who practices and enjoys many hands-on art-forms; singing, drumming, dancing and gathering for subsistence yearly. She loves helping other people and their families and finding a way to help individuals maintain stability through resource gathering and rebuilding their support system.

Amy Pomeroy
Clinical Operations Manager, Anchorage Adult Outpatient Clinic
Amy Pomeroy, Clinical Operations Manager, has served in the community in various roles from direct care staff to management over the past 14yrs. She enjoys providing individual and group services, specifically supporting adults with co-occurring disorders. Amy also enjoys supporting staff development and helps lead Alaska Behavioral Health’s PQI (Performance Quality Improvement) efforts.

Program Manager for Partial Hospitalization Programs
April Valentine, LBSW graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work from University of Alaska Anchorage in 2018. She has worked in the behavioral health field since 2016. She manages our team of clinical associates for Child and Family Services in Anchorage, supporting clients individually and through group settings. Her favorite part of this job is supporting the clients and watching them make progress.

Savanna Armour, M.Ed.
Fairbanks Clinician
Savanna Armour graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in December 2022 with her Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Prior to pursuing her Masters, she graduated with a B.S. in psychology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Savanna is passionate about creating and providing accessible care to as many individuals as possible; suicide education and prevention; and using a person centered, strengths-based orientation to help clients achieve their goals. Outside of the office, she enjoys hiking, reading, and knitting.

Fairbanks Clinician
Amber Brownell, MSW, LCSW works with adult clients in Fairbanks. She previously worked primarily with children and families, and continues to support parents. Amber is a transplant from New Mexico, but loves the cold Alaskan weather. In her free time, Amber enjoys reading and geocaching.

Brenda Fowler, MSCP, has her master’s degree in Counseling Psychiatry from Alaska Pacific University. She has been working as a Clinician on the Adult Services team since 2009. Brenda is passionate about working with people as they explore personal goals and gain skills to improve quality and satisfaction of life. She empowers others by providing a safe supportive environment using a holistic, person-centered approach incorporating a variety of treatment modalities to meet the needs of individuals she works with.

Kristin Hansen, LCSW
Anchorage Clinician
Kristin Hansen, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, graduated from Walla Walla University in 1996. She has a background in medical social work before transferring to mental health therapy. Kristen enjoys working with underserved cliental employing an evidenced based approach while focusing on a client’s strengths. Her personal interests include reading and history.

Jen Hurtig, LMSW
Wasilla Clinician
Jenn Hurtig, Licensed Master Social Worker, is a Clinician at the Mat-Su clinic. She graduated from USC School of Social Work in 2016 and worked in preventative mental health as a Community Support Coordinator before moving to mental health therapy. Jenn began her clinical journey with Intensive Case Management where she worked with those who experienced high-service needs before transitioning to the Mat-Su clinic. Specializing in CBT techniques, Jenn utilizes solution-focused, person-centered, trauma-informed modalities to help individuals and families build lives they feel are worth living. She enjoys reading, playing trombone, and eating delicious food.

He graduated with his Master’s in Clinical Psychology from UAA in 2018 and is currently working towards licensure. Lizzy Hook, LPC
Anchorage Clinician
Lizzy graduated from Regent University’s School of Psychology and Counseling in the summer of 2018. She moved from Montana to Alaska with her family in the spring of 2023 where she is working with AKBH’s adult outpatient team. She has done volunteer work in Nicaragua with survivors of human trafficking and has a heart for supporting individuals who have experienced suffering at the hands of others. She specialized in trauma treatment using EMDR and other modalities to help individuals reprocess and heal from their past. She loves all of the outdoors that Alaska brings, and enjoys cooking Indian cuisine and spending time with family.”

Nicole Jenkins, MS, LMFT has more than 20 years of experience in the behavioral health field and is finishing her Doctorate in Psychology, with the goal of becoming a Licensed Psychologist. Nicole provides behavioral health services to adults, children and families using a variety of treatment modalities to meet the needs of her clients.

Stephanie Morgan, M.Ed.
Anchorage Clinician
Stephanie Morgan, M.Ed., joined the Adult Services Team at Alaska Behavioral Health in May of 2021 after interning on the Child & Family Continuum in 2019. Her role at Alaska Behavioral Health is an extension of her first career as a research psychologist. She has taught psychology (mostly statistics and research methods) at Alaska Pacific University for 11 years and returned to school for clinical training three years ago. She hopes to serve the community by helping people grow by recognizing, developing, and leveraging their strengths. When not at work, Stephanie enjoys walking, reading, the arts, cooking, and is slowly learning piano.

Esther Ransom originally from Michigan, graduated with a master’s in social work from Spring Arbor University in 2019. She has a background in crisis intervention and substance use. Esther has worked mainly with adults in both outpatient and residential programs. Esther enjoys crocheting, knitting and camping.

Heather Roberts-Kelly, MS
Fairbanks Clinician
Heather Roberts-Kelly, MS, joined the Fairbanks-based Mobile Crisis Team July 2021. She obtained high school diploma in 1992 by attending a school for at risk juveniles. After taking time to raise her family, she continued her educations, and obtained Bachelor of Science in Sociology 2011 and a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling 2013. She worked as Crisis Team Lead in Colorado before moving to Alaska. Heather has four adult children and all live in Alaska. When Heather is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, two dogs, and everything Alaska has to offer.

Wyatt Yurkovich, M.Ed.
Fairbanks Clinician
Wyatt Yurkovich is a Master’s level therapist who graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in May 2023, earning his Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Wyatt practices from a humanistic and psychodynamic approach, focusing on aspects of mindfulness, existentialism, family-systems, early childhood experiences, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Wyatt strongly believes in providing a person-centered approach in his sessions, viewing his clients as the experts in their lives. Wyatt has experience working with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma-related diagnoses, and other life experiences.
