It's World Sleep Day! Getting good quality sleep is essential for learning and memory, a strong immune system -- and your mental health! It's not only about how much you sleep: it's also about how long it takes to fall asleep, how regularly you sleep, and how alert you feel when you're awake. Practice good sleep hygiene: keep regular sleeping and waking hours (even during breaks and weekends!), avoid screens an hour before bed, and listen to relaxing music.

Friends play an important role in young people's lives -- and friends may be the first person to notice that something is up when a young person is struggling. If you notice a friend has lost intertest in activities, is spending more time alone, or engaging in risky behavior, or has had rapid weight changes - ask them about. Listen to what they say - and help them connect to support.

Did you know that Alaska Behavioral Health has been providing services in Anchorage for almost 50 years! That's right -- this summer we celebrate our birthday!
The company was born as Anchorage Community Mental Health Services, Inc. in June 1974. Like some people, we've changed our nickname a few times -- operating as Southcentral Counseling Center in the past, and now as Alaska Behavioral Health.
Have a story about us that you'd like to share? Let us know! info@akbh.org

Young adults experience the highest rates of mental illness in the US - and many serious mental illnesses emerge during the teen and early adult years. If you're a young person (or you notice a young person) struggling, don't ignore it! Be kind to yourself and connect with people. Good sleep and good nutrition play an important role. Reach out and ask for help.
